Many professional football players are chasing a dream when they hope to win the Ballon d'Or and even those who are nominated for the award frequently leave empty-handed. There are not many strikers out there who can brag about being perennial contenders for this trophy, but Cristiano Ronaldo is one of them. In 2015 he managed to win the coveted trophy for the second time in a row and what’s most important is the fact that he outshined his archrival Lionel Messi in the process.

ronaldoThis was not a standard race between the two players, with Germany’s Manuel Neuer being also nominated and he greatly exceeded expectations. The Argentinean striker was expected to be a fierce contender for Cristiano Ronaldo, but instead he finished in the second place at a wide distance. He was even on the verge of losing this place to the German goalkeeper, so it is only fair to say that the Real Madrid player won the race with relative ease.

The panel that voted was made of some of footballers playing for the best football teams in the world and included coaches and captains, but also people from the media. The Portuguese striker was only slightly surprised about winning the Ballon d'Or and the same can be said about those who have monitored the preliminary events. After scoring a huge number of goals in the previous year and leading his team to victory in the Champions League, Cristiano Ronaldo was entitled to hope for a new trophy.

It was an incredible year for him and the fact that he brought the trophy back home three times is a huge accomplishment. Last year he scored a total of 56 goals in 51 games which is a phenomenal ratio and so far he has been even more prolific in 2015. He has set many personal records and hit numerous milestones, with Real Madrid having no intention to trade him anytime soon.

For Lionel Messi, the result was probably disappointing because he was also a key player for Barcelona but unfortunately his team is on a downswing. They are trailing Real Madrid in the domestic championship and are unlikely to win the trophy in 2015, after losing it in the last round against Atletico Madrid last season. Add to this the fact that there are some rumors that Lionel Messi could be leaving Barcelona at the end of the season and it is only fair to say that pressure is mounting on Luis Enrique.
